Reba dance was born in the eleventh century and spread widely inside Diqing. The Shenchuan Reba of Tacheng, Tibet, is known as the orthodox Reba dance because of its long history and relatively intact inheritance of the classical style. It is composed of songs, dances, monologues, and instrumental music. It is usually held during the Tibetan New Year, religious holidays, and droughts and floods. During the performance, men hold brass bells and women hold tambourines (hence the Reba Dance is called Tambourine Dance), walking around in circles and dancing. In history, Shenchuan Reba was once praised by Party and state leaders such as Zhou Enlai, Liu Shaoqi, Zhu De, etc. So, Tacheng was named the "Hometown of Reba Art" by the Diqing Prefectural Party Committee and Government in June, 1999. Shenchuan Reba originally originated from Tibetan Buddhism - "White Religion", which was a sacrificial activity in the religion at that time, and was later introduced to the folk by believers.
The predecessor of Reba was the "witchcraft" and "totem dance" of bon religion - a primitive religion of Tibet. It has a long history, which is rich content, unique in style, and superb in skills. After absorbing the essence of ancient Xiangxiong culture, religious culture, and folk art, it became a miracle in the splendid ancient Tibetan culture and art. Tacheng, as the hometown of Reba culture, has a solid mass base. Villagers and people regardless of age and sex all dance.
