The water of the Bitahai Lake is converged by the melting snow from the snow mountain and the streams. There is a circular island in the lake, and the vegetation and species there are very rich, which is called a "plant gene bank" by botanists. There is a historic Buddhist temple on the island. The wetland ecosystem surrounded by the Bitahai Lake is listed as an internationally important wetland. The Bitahai Lake is the most important part of Pudacuo National Park. There is a primitive fish living in the lake. According to the research of biologists, it is an ancient living fossil left over from the fourth glacial period. It is called the "Bitahai lip fish" due to its two-layer upper lip, which is also called the "Ptychobarbus chungtienensis". Every fifth month of the lunar calendar is the season when the azaleas in Bitahai Lake are in full bloom. When the breeze blows, azalea petals fall onto the lake surface one after another, attracting the swimming fishes in the lake. The fishes even faint after eating the petals and float on the lake, in this way, the drunk fishes and azaleas form the unique landscape. It is said that even the old bears in the forest will catch drunk fishes by moonlight. Feng Mu, a famous writer, once described this scene, since then, the landscapes of "azaleas and drunk fish" and "old bear catching fish" in the Bitahai Lake have become famous throughout the country.
