Habitat of Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys
The Yunnan snub-nosed monkey has a dark brown back and a white belly. Locals call it the "white monkey." It is one of the world's 25 most endangered primate species. According to the leaders of the nature reserve, in the 1960s and 1970s, there were more than 2,000 Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys in the Baima Snow Mountain area. However, due to rampant hunting, their numbers plummeted to about 70 by the early 1990s. In addition, the existing natural populations of Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys are almost completely isolated from each other, exhibiting an island distribution. Gene flow between groups is difficult, affecting the reproduction of the Yunnan snub-nosed monkey.

The establishment of the Baima Snow Mountain Nature Reserve and National Park
The Weixi County Conservation Bureau and National Park have implemented a series of effective conservation measures. Local residents' awareness of conservation has steadily increased, resulting in the effective protection of the near-extinct Yunnan snub-nosed monkey in this area. Their numbers are stabilizing and increasing year by year. Currently, over 1200 Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys have been identified. Since the establishment of the National Park in 2009, visitors entering the primeval forest in the morning often see the heartwarming sight of Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys foraging.

The division of the golden snub-nosed monkey troop in Xiangguqing has achieved phased results.
Baima Snow Mountain National Nature Reserve is the largest and highest national nature reserve in China, with its main objective being the protection of Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys and their habitat of cloud cold fir forests. It is one of the 25 global biodiversity hotspots identified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The Yunnan snub-nosed monkey is also identified by the IUCN as a globally highly endangered and rare species. The Chinese government has made international commitments, and the protection of Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys and their habitat is a matter of national image and touches every nerve of the country's nature conservation efforts. The reserve management bureau has always emphasized whether the Yunnan snub-nosed monkey population is growing steadily and whether its habitat is being improved.

After more than 30 years of hard work, the reserve has achieved remarkable results in resource conservation and management, community co-management, science popularization and education, and scientific research and monitoring, which have been fully affirmed by higher authorities. In 2006, our area was identified by the State Forestry Administration as one of the first national demonstration nature reserves; in 2011, it ranked among the top in the province in the national seven-ministry (commission, bureau) joint assessment of reserve management performance led by the Ministry of Environmental Protection, and was rated as an "excellent" management unit; in 2013, the reserve was awarded the honorary title of "National Advanced Collective" by seven central ministries (commissions) including the Ministry of Environmental Protection.
